Celebrate Charlie Parker

August 25, 2017
Saxophone

Jazz music is American. Kansas City is one of the integral cities in the formation of jazz, and Kansas City is the birthplace of jazz legend, Charlie Parker. This weekend is a part of the 10-day 4th Annual Charlie Parker Celebration. The celebration spans from August 17th through August 29th, 2017 with jazz festivities all across Kansas City and the Kansas City metropolitan area. Each night will feature a live concert taking us through the history of jazz. On Saturday, August 26th, Rhythm Changes at the Folly Theater will transport you through jazz across the ages from ragtime to swing, performed by current Kansas City musicians. The Celebration will also feature two artists in residence, Tivon Pennicott and Sullivan Fortner, and both will be at the Folly Theater for Rhythm Changes. Educational events and a history tour will also be featured during the Charlie Parker Celebration. On Saturday, following the History Tour at 18th and Vine, there will be a 21 Sax Salute in Lincoln Cemetery. There will be live performances surrounding Charlie Parker (also known as Bird or Yardbird)’s grave by UMKC Jazz Friends and other local jazz musicians. The birthday celebration will continue with a fried chicken feast at Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Heritage Center. The 2017 Charlie Parker Celebration is presented by KC Jazz Alive. KC Jazz Alive strives to build awareness and provide a voice for the Kansas City jazz community.
