Tips for Healthy Smiles This Fall

Autumn is a season filled with unhealthy treats. Sugary pumpkin spiced lattes, candied apples, and pies are just the beginning. Halloween is an entire holiday nearly devoted entirely to candy. How do you keep your smile and the smiles of your family healthy with all these sugar-laden threats around? How do you keep all these treats from pulling tricks on your teeth and the teeth of your loved ones? We have created a list of tips to help you and your family maintain healthy smiles this fall season.

#1 Drink Water.

Treats are probably going to happen this time of year.  Your kids are probably already bringing Halloween candy home from school. While moderation is still the most important thing when facing these tempting treats, it is also just as important to rinse away the harm with water. Drinking water after a sugary beverage or harmful treat helps your saliva to rinse away the bacteria. Water also helps make you feel full which can help you not to overeat the treats.

#2 Pick Real and Natural Treats

There are some healthy ways to get the flavors of fall without going for artificial sweeteners and processed candy. Sprinkling some lemon zest and cinnamon on apples and roasting them is a great way to get a seasonal, healthy treat. It also makes your house smell just like autumn. Pumpkin pie spice mix does not have sugar in it, and can be sprinkled into your coffee for a more affordable run at that basic seasonal latte.

#3 Keep Up With Your Routine

Remember that no matter how busy you and your family get, keep up with your oral hygiene routines. Brush and floss at least twice daily. Each brushing session should last at least two minutes. Brush gently, but firm enough to get your teeth clean. Make sure that you are getting time to visit your dentist at least twice a year for exams and cleanings.
