Summers in Kansas City, Kansas can be great. They can also feel like they go by very quickly. Back-to-school season is just around the corner. While your teenagers are on summer break from high school or when your kids are back home from college, it can be a great time to fit in a dental appointment. Wisdom teeth emerge in most people between the ages of 17 and 22. Wisdom teeth extractions can be done at earlier ages to preemptively prevent complications. Summer breaks are a popular time for people to take care of a wisdom teeth extraction. Doing so can help you to avoid potential complications and avoid disrupting your busy schedule.

Avoid Complications

Wisdom teeth are often the last to emerge in a mouth that does not have room for them. When wisdom teeth do erupt through the gums, they can grow in at wonky angles that can endanger the teeth nearby. Misalignment can crowd the rest of your teeth to cause shifting or damage to those other teeth,  jawbone, or nerves. Wisdom teeth can also partially erupt creating a flap in your gums that can collect bacteria, which can lead to infection, pain, and/or inflammation. Wisdom teeth can also stay beneath the gums and even beneath the bone, which is known as an impacted wisdom tooth. In these situations, the tooth can still cause issues beneath the surface and may need to be extracted.

Avoid a Busy Schedule

Your dentist can usually tell (through x-rays and exams) whether or not a wisdom tooth is going to be a problem. So, rather than waiting for pain or other complications, a preemptive consultation can be made with your dentist to examine the wisdom teeth. An extraction can be done to avoid the negative fallout from an emerging or impacted wisdom tooth. A wisdom tooth extraction typically results in a few days worth of recovery time, which is why summer break can be the perfect time to take care of it.
