It’s that time of year in Kansas City, MO when kids are going back to school and college classes are starting. Whether you are going to class yourself or you are sending your child off to college, we have some smile care tips for college students. College can be the first taste of independence that some people get and it is important that the smile stays taken care of. From smile care packages to dental visit reminders, there are ways to keep oral health at the forefront of the college student in your life’s mind.

Care Package

Care packages are sometimes filled to the brim with candy and sweet treats. While that is fine in moderation, sometimes it’s nice to send some healthier snacks for the smile. Or an even better option could be to send some basic smile care items. A new toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss along with a cool bin to keep them all in can be a great little care package. Include some sugarless gum for those times between classes that they can’t brush and you have a helpful kit. There are plenty of hip toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss options to be found that can add to the coolness of the care package.

Visits Home & Dental Visits

Even when away from school, it is important to visit the dentist at least twice a year. Most colleges and universities have a calendar that makes at least one of those dental visits fall during the school year. Dental visits can be planned well in advance so that they can coordinate during time off of school to allow for a visit home. Routine visits are especially important for people between the ages of 17 and 22, as that is the common age range for wisdom teeth to erupt and possibly cause problems. Staying on top of routine dental visits prevents most surprises from popping up in the smile’s health.
