Using Winter Break for Smile Needs

November 14, 2018

With Thanksgiving in a week, the holidays are fast approaching. If you have students in the family, they likely have a hefty winter break coming up with lots of free time. If you are a lucky adult, you may have a long winter break yourself. Time off from school is a great time to visit with the dentist. If you have a high school or college student that needs a wisdom tooth extraction and is back home in Kansas City, Missouri, the break from school is a good time to do it. Even as an adult, ending the year with a dental exam and cleaning is a great way to start 2019 off with a healthy smile.

Students & Wisdom Teeth

For some people, wisdom teeth grow into their smile with no problems at all. For many others though, wisdom teeth can prove to be a difficult introduction to the smile. Wisdom teeth are also known as third molars. They are the last teeth to erupt from the gums. For some smiles, there is no room for the wisdom teeth, which makes the third molars stay beneath the surface (this is known as impacted wisdom teeth) or they can emerge and push on the other teeth. Emerging wisdom teeth without the proper amount of room can shift your other teeth into awkward positioning. A partially-erupted wisdom tooth can cause infection in the gum tissue that surrounds it. To prevent these issues or to help manage them, a wisdom tooth extraction may be necessary. The recovery time for an extraction can vary from person to person, but a holiday break can be a good time for some students to take care of this matter.
