One reason people often seek whitening strips and other over-the-counter products is because they can brighten their smiles from home. To offer patients in Kansas City, MO, the benefits of brightening teeth from home, we have custom trays and gel. How will this system break up stains and offer a noticeably brighter smile?

How Do Trays and Gel Brighten Smiles?

While over-the-counter systems work, the results are not as dramatic as those our professional trays and gel offer, and in addition, they could lead to sensitivity. With our treatment, we take detailed impressions to create a set of custom-made plastic trays, which fit comfortably. We then prescribe a powerful bleaching gel. At home, you will simply fill the trays with gel and wear them for about 30 to 45 minutes each day. Over the course of one to two weeks, you will begin to see your discoloration break up and vanish. Some people even enjoy smiles brightened by multiple shades! On average, the results last about six months, but can potentially last longer with routine homecare and better oral hygiene.

How Do I Prevent Further Staining?

First, when they begin to reappear, remember that your trays and gel can be used for touch-ups. Next, understand that when we consume sugary foods and drinks, and don’t brush and floss correctly, we leave our teeth coated in plaque buildup. Plaque not only boosts the risks of tooth decay and gum disease, but also makes stains more visible. You should drink more water, cut back on drinks with dark pigments (coffee, tea, soda, red wine), eat healthier foods, and care for your smile from home. You need to brush your teeth twice daily for two minutes, and also floss every night before bed. You should schedule an appointment twice a year to have your teeth examined and cleaning. A cleaning removes plaque and allows you to leave with a brighter (and healthier) smile.

Solutions for Intrinsic Discoloration

Our at-home system addresses extrinsic stains (surface discoloration) and minor intrinsic stains (forming beneath the enamel). However, serious intrinsic stains may be difficult to remove. In these situations, we may suggest instead masking them with either bonding, porcelain veneers, or possibly a combination of the two. If you have severe discoloration and store bought systems have failed to address them, then talk to us about our full range of cosmetic treatments, which could mask your discoloration and brighten your smile, sometimes in as little as one visit.
