Your Kansas City, MO, dentist is currently not offering treatment for issues related to preventive, general, and cosmetic dentistry. However, we’re still addressing emergency situations on a case-by-case basis, helping correct problems that could harm your oral health, and overall health as well. So, what if you were due to have your wisdom teeth removed? Is an extraction an emergency situation?
The Importance of Removing Wisdom Teeth
As we approach adulthood, many of us will see up to four additional molars erupt in the rear of the mouth. For a few, these will cause no discernible changes to the smile. However, for many they mean serious trouble, including misalignment, infection, and painful partial eruption known as impaction. By extracting them, we prevent the complications and protect the health of your smile.
The Tooth Removal Process
If you had an appointment for a routine exam and cleaning, or for a cosmetic treatment, then we will reschedule for a future date, as our office is closed for the time being. But, if you had an appointment to address an emergency scenario, such as a damaged tooth, or yes, a wisdom tooth extraction, then we will find a time to see you and perform the procedure. When you arrive, we will schedule appointments to ensure you’re the only one in the waiting room. In between each patient visit, our team cleans and disinfects commonly touched surfaces, and we’re following strict health and safety guidelines.
We will administer a local anesthetic and may offer sedation as well to help you enter a calm and relaxed state. We then open the area of the gums above the teeth and gently extract them with forceps. We suture the extraction site closed, and send you home with detailed instructions to ensure the area heals properly. When you return for a follow-up visit, we will remove the sutures.
Keeping Smiles Safe and Healthy
We also perform extractions to address other emergency situations, such as a severely infected or damaged tooth. Removing the tooth helps prevent the spread of infection to surrounding ones, safeguarding your smile. We’re also have restorative treatments, such as fillings or crowns, to offer lifelike and dependable smile improvement.
