October 6, 2020

Did you know that we’re one of the few general dentistry offices in the area that offer IV sedation? We recommend this option to help keep our patients comfortable, and to assist those with anxiety and other complications that make undergoing treatment difficult. In today’s blog, yourKansas City, MO, dentistis looking whatthe IV sedation processinvolves.

Teeth Cleaning

Who Qualifies?

We usually reserve these treatments for people undergoing oral surgical procedures, or possibly multiple treatments at once. However, this is also a great choice for people with severe dental anxiety, the kind that makes even undergoing a simple cleaning a frightening prospect. We also help those with developmental issues that make receiving care difficult as well. We will take your medical history and current health into account before recommending this option. If you don’t qualify for IV, then we could also discuss nitrous oxide or oral sedation, which are commonly used for people of all ages, and with effects that wear off after a short time period.

The IV Sedation Process

We will administerthe strongest anesthetic possible intravenously, with a trained anesthesiologist monitoring your heart rate and vitals throughout the entire process. Our office is one of the few in the area that can offer this calming option! We will monitor your sedation levelsand vital signs during your treatment, and the calming effect will happen almost immediately.

What Happens After Your Treatment?

Following the procedure, the effects will take time to wear off, so you should arrange for a friend or family member to bring you home. We will send you home with detailed aftercare instructions. If you undergo jawbone grafting or dental implant placement, tooth extraction, or other common oral surgical procedures, then you will likely have a prescription for medications. We will also have detailed instructions for the first 24 hours or so to ensure proper healing and prevent complications. There will be follow-up visits as well, also we can monitor the healing process and ensure you’re healing as you should. If you have any questions about our approach to dental sedation, or if you think this could help you or a member of your family, then please don’t hesitate to contact us! Our team is implementing unique strategies and technologies to keep our office clean and disinfected, and to protect both our patients and our team members from COVID-19, so you can undergo crucial treatment with peace of mind.
