When was the last time you stopped in for a checkup? With a routine dental exam, your Kansas City, MO, dentist and our team help prevent poor oral health. In today’s blog, we’re going to talk about how we examine your smile, and what benefits this visit offers for the health and strength of your teeth and gums.

We All Need an Exam

Everyone benefits from a dental exam, whether you’re 8 or 80. A checkup is essentially a chance for the dentist to take a close look at your smile, often with the use of digital x-rays and intraoral cameras, to identify the presence of developing oral health issues. Addressing them early helps prevent the need for more extensive treatments, and also prevents painful complications. Maintaining regular visits every six months means there is little time for an issue to develop without our team catching it early and offering a solution. Typically, the exam involves looking for signs of demineralization and tooth decay, gingivitis, and gum disease, or even jaw joint issues like TMJ disorder and bruxism(chronic teeth grinding).

Oral Cancer Screenings

For adults, we will also screen for oral cancer once a year. The detailed screening lets us identify possible cancerous and precancerous areas early. The earlier the disease is caught, the more likely a full recovery is. For that reason, we also urge people to undergo a screening once every year without exception.

Keeping Your Teeth Clean

During the same visit, our team will also clean the smile. A dental cleaning is designed to remove all plaque and tartar buildup with an ultrasonic scaling device and a manual tool. Plaques is caused by harmful oral bacteria breaking down food particles and coating the teeth in a sticky layer of buildup. Over time, the plaque hardens into tartar and is impossible to with brushing and flossing alone. A cleaning is an excellent way to not only fight teeth stains and bad breath, but tooth decay and gum disease too! Our team would also be happy to discuss better homecare routines, such as proper brushing and flossing habits and better snack selections. With routine care both at home and in our office, you keep your smile strong, healthy, and brighter for years to come.
