The Benefits of IV Sedation

July 21, 2021

Did you know that we’re one of the only general dental practices in the area that offer IV sedation? With this calming solution, we can help patients enter a comfortable and relaxed state, even if they have severe dental anxiety. In today’s blog, your Kansas City, MO, dentist will talk about the benefits of IV sedation.

The IV Process

This is the deepest form available. Before we recommend this, we will take a close look at your medical history and assess your current state of health. A trained anesthesiologist will be on hand the entire time, and will monitor your treatment, adjusting the medication as needed. Administered through an IV, this ensures you have no memory of the procedure, and remain calm and comfortable throughout the process. The effects take time to wear off, so you may need to arrange for a friend or family member to bring you home afterward.

Other Options

We also have other options to ensure your comfort. If you have dental anxiety or need to undergo a restorative treatment, we could suggest nitrous oxide or oral sedation. Nitrous oxide lets you enter a clam and relaxed state, with effects that wear off once the procedure ends. We administer this through a mask over your nose. Oral sedation is taken before the treatment in the form of a pill or liquid, and the effects take a little more time to wear off, so someone needs to bring you home. The option we choose for you will depend on a number of different factors, including medical history, anxiety levels, and more.

Common Procedures Requiring Sedation

What procedures will we recommend IV sedation for? We may suggest them if you’re having a tooth removed in an extraction procedure, such as wisdom tooth removal. If you’re having one or more dental implants placed to support a new tooth or denture, we may prescribe this option. If you’re undergoing jawbone grafting or sinus lifts to rebuild and strengthen the parts of your smile that have lost mass and density following tooth loss, then again we could recommend IV to help you stay calm and relaxed.

If you have any questions about these procedures, or if you have dental anxiety, then talk to our team today. We want to make sure you obtain the care you need to enjoy strong, healthy smiles, without worrying about discomfort or anxiety. Schedule your next visit today!
