Don’t Forget to Brush and Floss!
In the next couple of days, you will be visiting family or hosting them in your home. You may even be traveling as we speak! Amid all the stress and craziness of this time of year, we don’t want you to forget about caring for your smile. Your Kansas City, MO, dentist explains why even on Christmas, brushing and flossing is very important!
Brushing Properly
When you choose a toothbrush, whether electric or manual, be sure it has soft bristles. Cleaning your teeth too hard with hard or medium bristles could inadvertently damage your outer tooth enamel. Also, make sure you use a toothpaste that contains both fluoride and the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance on the packaging. You should brush for two minutes, reaching every surface of your teeth, when you wake up and again before going to bed. Be sure to replace your toothbrush every three to four months, as worn-down bristles won’t do much to remove food particles and control plaque buildup.
Floss Daily
Even more important than brushing? Flossing! Brushing doesn’t reach the bits of food stuck between the teeth, which allows them to be easily broken down by bacteria, a process that leads to plaque buildup and an increased risk of tooth decay and gum disease. You should floss up and down the length of each side of every tooth, dipping briefly below the gumline to remove trapped food particles. You can use floss tape, a pick, or a water flosser, just as long as you take time to clean between your teeth before you go to bed each night!
Watch Out for Harmful Foods and Snacks
Bacteria really enjoys breaking down particles of food, especially sugar and starch. Which, unfortunately, means many of our holiday favorites are dangerous to your smile. Of course, the impact of pie, cakes, cookies, and other desserts is obvious, but mashed potatoes stuffing, biscuits, muffins, and sweet potatoes cold also leave behind harmful food particles. Be sure you drink water to help cleanse your mouth, and try to eat a few fresh fruits and veggies, as these can help scrub away plaque and food particles as you consume them.
