Gum Disease Linked To CancerA study led by the University of Buffalo has recently released results that show that older women who have had gum disease are at a higher risk for developing gallbladder and esophageal cancer. In the recent years, several studies have come out linking periodontal health to health in other areas of the body. As part of this study, women with a history of periodontal disease had a 14 percent higher risk of developing cancer of any kind. This specific study focuses on women, but the link has been found between gum disease and cancer in all demographics.  (more…)

where and when to watch the solar eclipseA total solar eclipse is happening on Monday, August 21, 2017, and for the first time in decades, much of America is in the path of totality. The path of totality is the limited swath of area that will experience a total solar eclipse where the moon’s shadow will completely obscure the sun. The path of totality is only 70 miles wide, but it does stretch across the United States. Much of Kansas City is just south of the path of totality, but near enough that most viewings in the area will have the sun obscured by about 90%. The last time that Kansas City was able to view a total solar eclipse was in the year 1806, and the next time will be 2205.  (more…)

Heart Of America Hot Dog Festival

Heart Of America Hot Dog FestivalThis weekend, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum will host its 2017 Heart of America Hot Dog Festival. The festival started in 2013 to commemorate the connection between hot dogs and American’s favorite past time, baseball. This year’s festival will feature live music by Adam Hawley, Jeanette Harris, Bloodstone, After 7, and ZAPP. More importantly, the festival will feature specialty hot dogs. This year’s debut dog, “El Maestro,” is named after the Cuban-born player, Martin Dihigo. Dihigo is the  to be honored in five different country’s Halls of Fame, including the United States, Mexico, Cuba, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic. The hot dog, “El Maestro,” is a grilled bratwurst topped with chorizo chili, pico de gallo, queso fresco, and garnished with tortilla strips. Other hot dogs featured will be the “Royal Frank” named after former Kansas City Royal, Frank White, Jr. There will also be other ballpark foods, interactive games, and admission to the museum. Negro Leagues Baseball Museum will be open for it’s regular hours, 9:00am – 6:00pm. Museums at the 18th & Vine complex will close at 6:00 pm. (more…)
