A dental cleaning and exam, or checkup, is the first dental treatment we experience, and is the only treatment that everyone should receive on a routine basis (at least once every six months). Professional cleanings are the only way to remove the calcified plaque, known as tartar, that clings stubbornly to your teeth over time. Otherwise, the bacteria in tartar can lead to destructive issues such as tooth decay, gum disease, and more. Likewise, professional examinations are the best way for your dentist to check for signs that such issues have already developed. Early detection and treatment are the most effective ways to address existing issues before they become more severe. In cases where gingivitis (early gum disease) is present, your preventive care may also include periodontal cleaning to remove harmful bacteria from underneath your gums.
Oral Cancer Screenings
As part of your routine examinations, your dentist will also perform comprehensive screening to check for tissue abnormalities that could indicate oral cancer. Lesions, ulcers, rough and/or discolored patches of oral tissue, and more are not always easy to spot on your own. If they’re detected during your routine screening, then your dentist may suggest an oral biopsy to determine if oral cancer is present. Through regular screenings, patients have a significantly higher chance of detecting their condition early, which improves their chances of successful treatment.
