Malocclusion Can Cause Headaches

Malocclusion is a condition where the top ridge of teeth does not properly line up with the bottom line of teeth. When the teeth do not properly line up, it can often lead to bruxism or teeth grinding which can result in sore faces, jaw disorders, and chronic headaches. While headaches are common and can be caused by a number of things including poor vision or dehydration, malocclusion may be an overlooked reason. If you have tried treating other options for your frequent headaches, it may be time to look at your teeth and their alignment.

Classes and Causes of Malocclusion

There are three types or classes of malocclusion. Class 1 is the most common type of malocclusion: where the upper jaw slightly overlaps the lower portion. Class 2 malocclusion is also known as an overbite or retrognathism; it occurs when the upper teeth and jaw severely overlap the lower. Class 3 is referred to as an underbite or prognathism (the reverse of Class 2), wherein the lower part of the jaw and teeth severely overlap the upper portion. Most people are born with a predisposition for malocclusion making it a hereditary condition. There can be some issues growing like excessive and severe sucking of the thumb that may lead to misalignment. If malocclusion is identified at a young age, it can be corrected with orthodontic treatment. Overcrowding of teeth may cause misalignment, as well.

Invisalign® for Adults

Some cases of malocclusion are treatable with Invisalign®. The clear aligners can realign your teeth discreetly without clunky braces. The aligners can be removed for eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing. Over time, the aligners will slowly and gently shift your teeth and bite into the correct alignment. Proper alignment could help to end the frequent headaches caused by malocclusion. Malocclusion could also be treated by removing overcrowding teeth.
